Meet the amazing Exmoor ponies on our working Exmoor farm next to the beautiful Dunkery Commons and find out how we manage a large herd. The ponies feature in Dawn Westcott's Wild Pony Whispering books and she works with them at liberty, building trust and connection. This includes the herd coming to the call.
Exmoor ponies are one of Great Britain's oldest (and wildest) native pony breeds - and they are endangered. The Exmoor Pony Project helps to safeguard and promote better understanding and treatment of Exmoor ponies.
When you arrive, we'll chat about Exmoor ponies, why they're so special and how they’re equipped to survive the challenges of Exmoor. You'll find out how this unique herd helps to support the project by producing wonderful Exmoor Compost for gardeners. Dawn will call the herd for you to meet the ponies up close - and the pen panels will enable you to experience their captivating herd energy and interactions from a safe perspective. This is really like being amongst the herd and a special opportunity to get an idea of their individual characters and personalities and how they interact. There will be time for you to watch and connect with the ponies, which many people find an enriching, enchanting - and even healing - experience.
We’ll have light refreshments including tea, coffee and cake.
Personalised, signed copies of Dawn’s books
(published in hardback: Wild Pony Whispering, Wild Stallion Whispering and Wild Herd Whispering) and bags of well-matured Exmoor Compost for the garden will be available to purchase, on the farm.
This is a truly unique Exmoor Pony Experience on a working Exmoor farm. Proceeds help support the Exmoor Pony Project
You'll arrive at our working farm and park on the farm site. Nick and Dawn will meet you and take you to the welcome area where there'll be a chat about Exmoor ponies, before Dawn calls the herd and you can meet the ponies at close hand. We advise you to wear suitable, robust footwear for a farm visit, including waterproof clothing if it's raining, although there are under cover areas. Pen panels will separate you from the herd, allowing safe viewing. You will be walking about on the farm site and in the ponies migration areas, so although there is hard standing and bark chip areas, this is a real farm experience and there may be a bit of mud!
National Park Experiences is a curated collection that brings the stories of our National Parks to life. Each experience offers an authentic insight into the landscape and special qualities of a National Park.Testimonial!"Thank you, Dawn and Nick, for the amazing experience and privilege. Saturday was a breathtaking afternoon. The herd is remarkable! Each and everyone of the ponies are beautiful, full of character and your dedication to them is beguiling! It was a pleasure to be allowed to share the experience of being with you both and the ponies. I would recommend anyone who has not done so yet to come and visit you. We will most certainly coma back again.”
